Are you going to Phu Quoc and wondering what activities to do on the island?
Beaches and swimming
The island is a paradise especially for beach lovers and those who like to relax by the sea. It offers some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Vietnam, and it would be a shame to just stay on the hotel beach when there are so many others to discover.
Some of the most beautiful beaches on Phu Quoc include:
- Bai Sao Beach - A beautiful beach with white sand and clear water on the southern tip of the island.
- Long Beach - The most famous beach of the whole island on the west coast, which is lined with many hotel complexes and restaurants, offering all the necessary facilities.
- Ong Lang Beach - A beautiful beach that is more popular with the locals, so you won't see as many tourists as other beaches when you visit.
- Vung Bau Beach - A cool beach with fewer tourists, clear water and calm sea.
- Cua Can Beach - A unique beach at the mouth of the Cua Can River into the sea, surrounded by fishing villages.
- Bai Dai Beach - A long, wide sandy beach with good tourist infrastructure and a number of hotel complexes in the immediate vicinity.
- Khem Beach - A quiet beach on the eastern side of the island with white sand and clear water with several hotel complexes.
Large hotel complexes on Phu Quoc are most often located on Long Beach, but some can be found on smaller beaches such as Khem Beach or Bai Dai. The lesser-known beaches tend to have family-run guesthouses and accommodation with locals.
All the beaches on Phu Quoc are public, so you can visit them even if you stay in a hotel on another beach.
Snorkeling and diving
Surrounded by tropical seas that are full of interesting underwater life, Phu Quoc Island is one of the best diving destinations in all of Vietnam.
Some snorkelling sites are accessible directly from the beaches, while others are best reached by boat. Local travel agencies offer a large number of organised snorkelling trips.
The coral reefs close to the beaches and shoreline are often damaged by fishing and tourism, yet there are some great spots on the island to go in search of schools of colourful fish:
- An Thoi Islands - 18 small islands to the south of Phu Quoc, which are renowned as a great destination for divers and also offer beautiful and deserted beaches
- Hon Mot Island - A tiny island north of Phu Quoc offering unique snorkelling and diving, especially for the more experienced individuals.
- Rach Vem - A beach in the north of the island, adjacent to which is a local fishing village on stilts, where you'll find schools of tropical fish.
- Ganh Dau - An area of rocky coastline and several islets in the northwest of the island where boat trips are taken.
Another very popular activity on Phu Quoc is sea walking, an activity where you walk on the seabed with a special helmet that allows you to breathe easily, and enjoy views of the diverse underwater life.
Temples and monuments
If you visit Phu Quoc, you certainly don't have to spend your entire stay just by the sea. The island is large enough to offer a number of other places of interest, especially the various temples and historical sites.
On Phu Quoc you can visit these interesting places:
- Ho Quoc Temple - A Buddhist temple on a hill at the southern tip of the island, offering spectacular views of the coast and the sea.
- Coconut Prison - An infamous prison that was used during the Indochina War and later during the Vietnam War.
- Dinh Cau Temple - A unique temple right by the sea that served as an important religious site, especially for local fishermen.
- Cao Dai Temple - A huge temple of a unique religion that combines Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism and Confucianism.
Wildlife and animals
The central area of the island is covered in dense tropical jungle for you to explore. A large part of the island is Phu Quoc National Park, where you can observe interesting animal species, such as hulmans, langurs and loris living in the local forests.
You can also visit the beautiful Suoi Tranh waterfall in the middle of the dense jungle. There are several other smaller waterfalls on the island, but Suoi Tranh is one of the largest and most famous.
Amusement Parks
Phu Quoc has been receiving an increasing number of tourists in recent years. Along with them, several amusement parks have also arrived on the island to make your holiday more enjoyable. Some of the most popular theme parks include:
