Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam

Wondering how to get around the island? Are there buses on Phu Quoc? How to rent a scooter? Or is a car more convenient?

We answer all these questions in the chapter below.

Find a hotel on Phu Quoc Island

Rent a scooter

Renting a scooter will offer you the greatest freedom when travelling around the island. Since scooters are the most popular means of transport even with locals, you can rent one very cheaply at any corner and set off to discover the backwater beaches, viewpoints and other interesting places.

Even in Phu Quoc, like other places in Southeast Asia, it's definitely not ideal to learn to ride a scooter here.

The traffic in Vietnam is quite wild and requires a confident and experienced driver with a valid driver's license. If you have no experience driving a scooter, use very cheap taxi apps or rent a car.

Where to rent a scooter and what are the prices?

You can easily find scooter rentals in any tourist resort, at the port or in the city.

Before renting, always check the reviews of the rental company on Google Maps and be sure to make a thorough note (on video or camera) of the condition of the rented scooter. Many smaller hotels and travel agencies will also rent you a scooter. You do not need to book in advance.

Prices for renting a scooter can vary, with the cheapest starting at 100 000 vnd per day. If you want a better scooter, expect to pay around 180 000 vnd per day.

What to watch out for

When renting a scooter in Phu Quoc, you probably won't need to present any driver's license or other certification. Officially, however, you should have a Group A driving licence to drive a scooter in Vietnam; just A1 is not enough. You also need a valid international driving licence. These documents can come in handy in case of a police check, and especially for insurance in case of an accident.

Also, never leave a valid travel document as a backup for your scooter. In case of any problems, it would be very complicated for you to get your document back. Always opt for a cash deposit.

Rent a car

Renting a car is not very common among tourists in Phu Quoc. Traffic is heavy, driving is complicated and there are only a few official rental companies on the island. In case you want to rent a car, you can do so with a local travel agency, but we rather recommend using a taxi app for transportation over shorter distances.

Taxi or Grab

For moving short distances within Phu Quoc Island, taxis and their alternatives are a great option. This type of transport is very cheap and there are plenty of drivers.

The most used taxi app is Grab, which usually works well. You'll pay approximately 10 000 vnd for a 1km journey. There aren't always enough drivers available on the app, so you may find yourself waiting a while for a driver.

The alternative is the slightly more expensive official taxis. Hiring a taxi and driver for the whole day for a fixed price is also a popular option. This is a great option if you want to get around the various places on the island and not have to worry too much about transport. You will pay the private driver approximately 800 000 vnd per day.

Buses

There are several tourist bus lines operating on the island, connecting the most famous resorts with tourist attractions. However, you can travel with them even if you are not staying in one of the hotel complexes.

These green VinBus buses are free of charge.

You can find the routes of each line on maps.vinbus.vn.

For tourists, these bus lines are the most useful:
