In the southern suburbs of Ostrihome, visit a very photogenic industrial monument, the remains of a historic coal conveyor. In Hungarian you will find this place under the name Esztergomi szénrakodó.
Take a short trip out of town to a very photo-worthy location and experience Ostřihom from a completely different perspective.
The remains of a coal cable car
Right in the riverbed of the Danube, a well-preserved steel structure stands on massive concrete pillars, which served as the terminus of a 5 km long coal conveyor belt.
The transport of coal from the mines near Dorog to the Danube freight port began in 1927 and continued until 1970.
At present, the only surviving structure is the one that loads coal from the conveyor belt directly onto ships.
How to get there
The coal loader stands in the Danube about 4.5 km south of Ostrihome.
It is very easy to get there by car, as there is a truck ferry across the Danube right next to the historic loader(the Maria Valerie Bridge is only accessible for cars, pedestrians and buses).
The turn-off from the main road is marked with a pictogram of the ferry and the sign "Párkány - Štúrovo", see the route map from the centre. You can park for free at the ferry.
The nearest bus stop "Esztergom, horgásztanya" is on the main road about 450 metres from the loader. From the centre of Esztergom, lines 817 (only once a day on school days) and 812 (3 times a day on weekdays) run here.
