Esztergom is located in the very north of Hungary, right on the border with Slovakia. The city is accessible by train from Budapest, but you can also use the railway station in the cross-border Slovak town of Štúrovo.
Of course, Ezstergom is also served by regional bus routes and is easily accessible by car.
By car and parking in Esztergom
There is no motorway leading to Ezstergom. The nearest expressway, the M1, runs about 30 km south of the town.
Driving is easily possible from both the Hungarian and Slovak sides, and there are no restrictions or border controls when you cross the Maria Valerie Bridge from Štúrovo.

Parking in the centre
Street parking in the Old Town is charged at 500 huf per hour, payable only in cash at parking meters.
You can park for free in the car park of the Basilica on the north side of Szent István Tér (location on googlecom/maps).
Free parking is also popular on the Slovak bridgehead of the Maria Valerie Bridge in Štúrovo (location at googlecom/maps).
By train directly to Ezstergom
In the south of the city lies the terminus of the railway station with frequent connections to Budapest.
Trains between Ezstergom and Budapest's Nyugati Station run every half hour (weekdays and weekends), take 64 minutes and cost around 1 120 huf. You don't need to buy a ticket online, just at the ticket machine or at the ticket office at the station.

By train via Štúrovo
An alternative train route to Ezstergom goes via the neighbouring Slovak town of Štúrovo. The international EuroCity trains stop at the local station and run between Prague - Pardubice - Brno - Breclav - Bratislava - Štúrovo - Budapest.
International trains run once every 2 hours and you can buy tickets online for the lowest price on the websites of the individual railway companies:

The railway station in Štúrovo is quite far from the city and the journey to the Ostrihome Basilica is over 5 km.
Directly from Štúrovo station, there is a bus every two hours (at every odd hour) without changing buses to the bus station in Esztergom. You can buy a ticket from the driver for 1,50 eur and you can find a detailed timetable on the Volánbusz website or on idos.
By bus
Frequent connections with Hungarian cities are also offered by the bus service of the Hungarian carrier Volánbusz.

- Budapest - line 800 1-2 times per hour, departs from Árpád Híd bus station and the journey takes 80 minutes, i.e. almost 20 minutes longer than by train, the ticket is slightly cheaper and costs 990 huf
- Visegrád - line 880 once an hour, ticket for 720 huf
- Tatabánya - lines 1784, 804, 805, 824, ticket for 1270 huf
