In the lower part of the old town, the church of St. Ignatius of Loyola (Szent Ignác Templom) with the adjacent former monastery and hospital dominates the waterfront.
This beautiful Baroque building with two slender towers is one of Hungary's leading monuments of this architectural style.
History of the church
The church in honour of St Ignatius was built by the Jesuit order after the Turkish troops withdrew from Ostřihom.
The building was completed and consecrated in 1738 and even functioned as the main Hungarian cathedral between 1820 and 1856 during the completion of the Ostrihome Basilica.
Admission and opening hours
The church is open to the public daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Admission is free of charge.
