Sights and history

Ostrihom is one of the most famous historical towns in Hungary. Most tourists head to Ostřihom to see Hungary's largest religious building , the 19th-century St. Vojtech Basilica, which towers on a rocky hill above the Danube River alongside the medieval Royal Castle.

One of Hungary's finest Baroque buildings, the Church of St Ignatius, completes the famous sights of Ostrich.

Stroll through the streets of old Esztergom

Ostrihome's old town is charming and will take you back in time several decades.

Stroll through the romantic streets of the Water Town from Széchenyi Tér Square towards the Basilica. At first, you'll encounter plenty of restaurants and cafes along the streets, but as you climb the hills, the urban character is replaced by village houses and scenes.

In particular, the hilly Old Town around St Thomas' Chapel literally breathes the quiet and slow-paced atmosphere of the early 20th century.

Enjoy the breathtaking views

Ostrihom is a town built on the banks of the Danube and at the foot of the hilly Duna-Ipoly National Park. This combination alone suggests that there are spectacular views of the surrounding area from many points around the town.

The best views of the Old Town, the river and the Slovak plains on the opposite bank open directly from the Ostrihoma Basilica, both from the indoor panoramic hall accessible for a fee and from the outdoor terrace with free 24/7 access.

On the other hand, the most beautiful view of Castle Hill with the Royal Castle and the Basilica can be seen from the promenade in the Slovak town of Štúrovo (location at google.com/maps), or from the Maria Valerie Bridge.

Boating on the Danube

Right in the centre of the city you will find the dock for large cruise ships (location at google.com/maps), which organize cruises to/from Ostrihome, but also to Budapest and other destinations.

Cruises in Ostrihome are organised by Mahart Passnave.

Sightseeing cruises from Ostřihomí with return to Ostřihomí sail twice a day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from mid-June to mid-September, stopping in Szob or Zebegény.

The price of the return cruise with the possibility to get off or not to get off at will along the route is 1 500 huf, see official information.
