The steel structure of the road and pedestrian bridge named after the last daughter of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I is one of the landmarks of the city.
The Maria Valeria Bridge connects the Hungarian town of Ostřihom with the Slovak town of Štúrovo.
The border bridge with a view
A pedestrian walkway runs along both sides of the bridge, which also serves as one of the best vantage points for viewing the Ostřihom Basilica and Castle Hill.
The current bridge was built in 1895 and its interesting feature is that it is made up of 5 different length spans. The geological conditions of the Danube bed did not allow for a symmetrical form and equal length of all bridge spans.
In total, the bridge crosses the Danube for a distance of 518 metres.
The viewing promenade on the Ostřihom is located on the Slovak side in the town of Štúrovo.
Without controls...
After the accession of Hungary and Slovakia to the Schengen area in 2007, the bridge is completely free of border controls or customs.
By car, bus or on foot you can cross the Maria Valeria Bridge without being checked by anyone 24/7.
