On a rocky hill just below the Ostřihom Basilica stands a well-preserved castle dating back to the 10th century with monumental walls up to 50 metres high and a defensive tower.
The main castle palace has also been preserved and now houses a museum, which you can tour with a guided tour. Thanks to its position above the town and the river, Ostřihom Castle is one of the landmarks of the town.
In Hungarian, you will come across the term Ezstergomi vár.
The centre of the Kingdom of Hungary
Ostřihom was probably chosen as one of its residences by Prince Gejza, who founded the foundations of the fortified castle in the 10th century.
The Royal Castle of Ostřihom saw its greatest development during the reign of King Béla III during the 12th century, when Ostřihom became one of the main centres of the entire Kingdom of Hungary.
During the 16th century, the castle briefly came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, but it was not significantly damaged and you can still admire many of the original walls and buildings, especially from the 12th century.
