The Dragon Caves ( Cuevas del Drach in Spanish) can be found between Manacor and Porto Cristo in the east of the island. They were first mentioned in 1338, but were not really explored until much later, in 1880 by the German speleologist M. F. Will, who drew a detailed plan for the first time, and in 1896 by the French speleologist E. A. Martel, who discovered the part that is still accessible to visitors today.
The largest lake, which measures around 170 metres in length and reaches a depth of up to 12 metres in places, is named after him. It is on this lake that the tour also includes a short, roughly ten-minute concert, when a quartet of players sail on boats. After the concert it is possible to take a boat ride a few metres to the exit.
The total route of the tour is just over 1 kilometre and the temperature inside is kept at a constant 18°C with humidity up to 95%, which is essential for the growth of the decorations. These stalactites have been growing here for millions of years, the decorations are illuminated and if you look closely you can see fossil remains of shells and marine animals.
