Getting to Mallorca

Cala Gat

Mallorca is an island more than 180 km from the nearest mainland, which makes it clear that practically the only way to get here is by plane.

By air

The island has a single international airport, with all scheduled and charter flights. See full information on transport to/from the airport, services or how long you need to be at the airport before your flight. Palma de Mallorca PMI .

Mallorca's connections to the world are excellent all year round, but especially in the summer season.

Very frequent connections are mainly to the Spanish mainland, Germany and the UK.

Direct long-haul flights fly to New York during the summer.

Where to buy tickets to Mallorca

Ideally, buy flights to Mallorca 3 to 4 months in advance for the lowest price if you are flying in the summer season. During the winter, you can buy tickets cheaply with low-cost airlines even a few weeks before departure.

You can buy tickets either on the airlines' websites or through one of the flight search engines.

By ferry

Mallorca can also be reached by boat, with several routes to mainland Spain and France. However, due to the cost and distance, it is only worthwhile for those who are really scared of flying or those who want to bring their own car to Mallorca.

Much more useful, however, are the ferries to the neighbouring Balearic islands of Ibiza and Menorca.

Mallorca - Ibiza ferry

Boats to Ibiza always leave from the port of Palma, 3-5 times a day depending on the season and the day of the week. On the route to Ibiza, the largest city, 2 companies sail: Balearia and Transmediterranea. The former deploys a fast boat once a day, which can cover the route in 2 hours, while the others take about 3.5 to 4 hours.

Prices for one-way boat tickets start at 50 eur, the fast boat then goes out at 70 eur. Balearia's services are always cheaper, you can buy tickets online.

Flights ( Iberia and Air Europa) can be bought for a similar price on the route from Mallorca to Ibiza, but after calculating the time needed to get to/from the airport and the waiting time, the boat comes out cheaper.

Mallorca - Menorca ferry

Even closer to Mallorca than Ibiza is Menorca. Balearia and Transmediterranea ferries also sail here. However, each sails from a different port and the prices and journey times vary greatly.

  • Balearia departs from the port of Alcúdia in the north-east of the island and ends in Menorca at Ciutadella. It sails 2-4 times a day and the journey takes an hour and a half to 2 hours. A one-way ticket costs from 63 to 90 eur depending on the time.
  • TheTransmediterranea sails from Palma to the port of Mahon, the journey takes 6 hours and usually only runs 1 to 2 times a week. However, the ticket price is significantly lower than competitors and starts at 34 eur one way.

Alternatively, on this route you can also take advantage of the Iberia and Air Europa airline connections, with one-way tickets starting at about 65 eur. In this case, air travel is already a consideration, given the fact that the faster ferries do not leave directly from Palma, but from the port of Alcúdia, an hour's drive away.

Mallorca - Barcelona ferry

You can also take a boat to the mainland. Specifically, there are regular services to the ports of Valencia, Gandia, Dénia, but the most popular route is the one to Barcelona.

Balearia and Transmediterranea also operate on this route.

  • Balearia operates from Palma and the port of Alcúdia. The journey from Palma takes 7.5 hours, from Alcúdia 6 hours. One-way tickets start at 71 eur from Palma and 65 eur from Alcúdia, and both routes run daily. The eventual car charge is roughly 100 eur.
  • The Transmediterranea sails daily from the port of Palma and the journey takes 7.5 hours. For a one way ticket you pay 72 eur, the car fee is approx 115 eur.

However, between Mallorca and Barcelona (and other cities in Spain), it is worth the time and cost to use air travel. Ryanair has the cheapest tickets (in promotions and for 10 eur one-way, standard around 25 eur), but also Air Europa or Vueling, for example.
