Calvari Steps

Calvari steps

The Calvari Steps in Pollence leading to a small chapel at the top. In total you climb 365 steps - 1 step for every day of the year. They are surrounded by cypress trees on both sides and a total of 14 three-metre high crosses, which are meant to symbolise the suffering that Jesus had to endure on his Way of the Cross.

In honour of this, on Good Friday during Easter, a carved statue of Jesus is carried down from the cross into the church, the whole procession walking in complete silence, lighting its way with torches. It is a very impressive ritual of Holy Week.
