San Sebastián de La Gomera

Torre del Conde

With nearly 10,000 inhabitants, San Sebastián de La Gomera is by far the largest and capital city on the island of Gomera.

It's a natural gateway for all tourists arriving from Tenerife by ferry, but it's also a nice excursion spot for a few hours if you're staying elsewhere on the island.

Sights and attractions

The following sights should not be missed in San Sebastian:

  • Torre del Conde - a 15th century Castilian watchtower meant to represent strength and the ability to defend yourself, but in reality it was never fitted with any modern weapons. There is a beautiful park around the tower, but the interior of the Torre del Conde is not accessible.
  • Iglesia de La Asunción - a beautiful little church from the 18th century, it is an ideal stop on a walk through the city, entrance is free
  • Calle Real - the main pedestrian area with plenty of restaurants and shops
  • El Faro - a small lighthouse in the northern suburbs of San Sebastian with beautiful views of the ocean and the neighbouring island of Tenerife

Beaches and swimming

Although Valle Gran Rey is a much better known and better beach resort, there are also several beaches in San Sebastian.

These are ideal for a short stopover rather than a long stay.

  • Playa de San Sebastián - the main town beach right in the centre is covered in black volcanic sand. The entrance to the water is very gradual and the sea is protected from the waves by jetties. However, the beach and the surrounding area are quite busy.
  • Playa de Ávalo - an orphaned beach about 3 km north of the centre is ideal for relaxing in absolute tranquillity. Large rocks cover the beach as well as the entrance to the water.

Where to stay

If you choose San Sebastián as a place to stay, for example because of its good transport links, we would recommend these hotels:
