Getting around La Gomera

Gomera

La Gomera measures roughly over 55 km in length and width. It is also very hilly, so you will have to use public transport, taxis or travel by rental car.

Travelling by car

Many of the natural attractions can only be reached comfortably by car or by long-distance hiking.

Therefore, renting a car is the most common option for getting around La Gomera.

We have compiled a detailed section on prices, traffic rules and attractions - read Car rental on La Gomera.

Public Transport - Buses

Bus services mainly serve the largest towns, but as several routes also pass through the mountains, buses are also usable for tourists.

Especially if you don't want to just walk roundabout routes from your car and back to your car again, buses will be a good option for you.

Public transport is provided by Guagua Gomera, with the term "guagua" being used for "bus" in all the Canary Islands. This is also why, for example, bus stations are referred to as Estación de guaguas.

The official website with timetables and ticket prices can be found at this address: guaguagomera.com.

All bus stops are always clearly marked and the vast majority of them (including those in the mountains outside the municipalities) have a stone shelter.

Somewhat confusing timetables are posted at bus stops. At each stop you will always find timetables for all the lines on the island, including those that don't stop at the station at all.

In addition, the timetables at the stops and on the website only ever give departure times from the first stop on the route. So if you are waiting for a bus elsewhere, you need to calculate the departure time roughly.

Searching for connections

Use the usual route planners such as google.com/maps or maps.cz to get an approximate time. Buses don't run significantly slower than regular cars, so journey times are relatively appropriate.

While Google Maps does not display bus stops in Gomera and therefore the public transport planning does not work, maps.cz displays the locations of all bus stops reliably.

Fares and where to buy tickets

Tickets can be bought from the driver and can be paid by card or cash.

There are no discounted day or weekly tickets and you always pay for each individual ride.

You can find out the current price in advance on the website by clicking on a specific line: guaguagomera.com/tarifas.

Payment is based on distance, with the lowest price always 1 eur and the highest price 5 eur.

Taxi

Mobile apps like Uber and Bolt don't work on La Gomera, but regular taxis work well here.

You can find taxi ranks, where cars actually wait from about 7am to 9pm, in towns like San Sebastian, Valle Gran Rey, Vallehermoso or Playa Santiago.

If you don't see a car at a taxi rank in these towns, it usually appears within 30 minutes.

Taxis can also be booked by phone. Telephone numbers are always listed on signs that say "Taxi".

Prices are always strictly calculated according to the meter and can be paid by card or cash.
