The Draceana drago tree is one of the symbols of the Canary Islands.
The locals really appreciate the trees of this species, so almost every island always cherishes the oldest and largest specimens of Drago.
The most famous attraction is undoubtedly the huge Drago Milenario on Tenerife, but La Gomera also has its own carefully tended Drago de Agalán north of Alajeró.
The Drago de Agalán is over 400 years old and the largest of its kind on La Gomera.
It grows in the dry southern part of the island, but in a deep valley full of prickly pear and palm trees.
A rocky path leads to the Drago de Agalán from the main road for about 1.2 km. From the road to the tree you go steeply downhill, and you have to go back the same way.
There is a small parking area at the trailhead (see map).
If you are not travelling by car, you can use bus line 3 running on the Alajeró - Playa Santiago - San Sebastián route. The walk from Alajeró to Drago de Agalán is about 2.5 km (see map).
