Alto de Garajonay

Alto de Garajonay

Right in the middle of the island and the Garajonay National Park is the highest mountain of La Gomera - Alto de Garajonay.

The highest point is 1,487 metres above sea level and, as there are no similarly high hills in its vicinity, there are spectacular views in all directions.

The 10 best accommodations in Gomera

At the top is a circular stone lookout point from which, in good weather, you can see the neighbouring islands of Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro, in addition to the slopes of Gomera.

Variants of the Alto de Garajonay ascent routes

There are several marked hiking trails to the highest mountain on La Gomera.

From the Pajarito saddle

From the roundabout at the Pajarito saddle, two different routes lead to the summit.

This starting point is popular because there is relatively ample parking around the roundabout.

  • The direct route is shorter but much steeper
  • The easier route follows contours for the most part and is popular with not-so-trained hikers

There is also a bus stop at the Pajarito roundabout.

  • Line 1: Valle Gran Rey - Arure - El Cercado - Chipude - Igualero - Pajarito - Mirador de los Roques - Degollada de Perasa - San Sebastian
    • 5 times a day Monday to Saturday; 2 times a day on Sundays and public holidays
    • Map and timetable

From El Contadero car park

The easiest route is from the north and the El Contadero car park on the main road.

Most of the way is on a paved, rocky road, partly through a nice pine forest. The elevation gain is not that great and the route can be managed by less trained hikers.

The El Contadero car park is only accessible by car.

From the village of Igualero

The small village of Igualero is popular for its beautiful Mirador de Igualero viewpoint and there is also a direct route from here to Alto de Garajonay.

The first very short part of the route is up steep steps, but the rest of the route is on a very comfortable path only slightly uphill.

There is a bus stop in the village of Igualero, through which the following lines run:

  • Line 1: Valle Gran Rey - Arure - El Cercado - Chipude - Igualero - Pajarito - Mirador de los Roques - Degollada de Perasa - San Sebastian
    • 5 times a day from Monday to Saturday; 2 times a day on Sundays and holidays
    • Map and timetable
  • Line 6: Valle Gran Rey - Arure - El Cercado - Chipude - Igualero - Alajeró - Gomera Airport
