Malpaso is the highest mountain on El Hierro, measuring 1,501 metres.
To the north, east and south there are no similarly high mountains in the vicinity and therefore spectacular views over much of the island. Only to the west are the wide views obstructed by the mountain ridge with the similarly high Mount Tanganasoga (1 384 m).
Climb to the top of Mount Malpaso
The highest point of El Hierro is very easy to reach if you travel around the island by car.
Follow the tarmac road to the large free car park at the historic monument of Cruz de Los Reyes.
From here, a signposted path leads to the top of Malpaso, and as the car park itself is at 1,300 metres, the elevation gain is not great.
The distance from Cruz de Los Reyes is less than 2 km one way - see the route map.
Malpaso is also crossed by the Camino de le Virgen, a long-distance route that crosses the entire island from east to west.
If you're not travelling by car, you're in for a long-distance hike anyway, as the nearest bus stops are in the village of El Pinar, 8km away. The elevation gain in this case is more than 700 metres.
See the map of the marked trail from El Pinar to Malpaso.
