In the orphaned western half of El Hierro you will find very few signs of civilization.
One of them is the beautiful church of Our Lady of the Kings, located in La Dehesa Natural Park.
The church here was built in honour of the island's patron saint, Our Lady of Kings, who, according to legend, supplied El Hierro with rain showers during one of the worst droughts in the island's history.
The chapel is open to the public every day from 10:00-17:00 and admission is free. You can buy small church souvenirs in the small shop and you can also pay by card.
Cueva del Caracol
About 100 metres from the chapel is the large Snail Cave, which still serves as a shelter for sheep and goats from the weather.
The Cueva del Caracol used to be one of the main shelters for the locals who used to graze their cattle in the orphaned western part of the island.
Even today, some parts are still used as a sheep roost, but the cave is free and open to tourists.
How to get there
The chapel of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes can only be reached by car on a good tarmac road running along the southern and northern slopes of the central mountain range.
There are no buses.
The GR-131 long-distance hiking trail also passes by the chapel, crossing El Hierro from east to west.
