Mirador de Isora

Which are the best and cheapest places to stay on El Hierro? How much does it cost to stay in summer and low season? Read in this chapter.

Where to stay on El Hierro

El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands, but due to its ruggedness, driving distances are often quite long, so it's a good idea to match your choice of accommodation to the activity you want to do on the island.

Most of the accommodation is smaller private apartments and there are very few regular hotels.

Valverde

The largest town on the island is located in the northern half of the island and there are no conventional hotels, only private apartments.

Advantages

  • Complete facilities (restaurants, many shops, petrol station, hospital)
  • The only reasonable place to stay if you are without a car
  • Often lower prices than more touristy locations

Disadvantages

  • Not located by the sea
  • Absence of classic hotels

El Golfo

The most densely populated area is on the north coast in a wide valley called El Golfo. Here you will find towns such as La Frontera, Tigaday and Las Punta.

Our tips for hotels

There are two unique hotels in El Golfo:

  • Hotel Puntagrande **** - It boasts the title of the smallest hotel in the world and stands on a small promontory above the wild cliffs of Las Punta.
  • Balneario Pozo de la Salud *** - one of the largest hotels in the Hierro is located under majestic cliffs right by the sea

Benefits

  • Complete facilities (restaurant, many shops, gas station)
  • Beautiful surroundings and views
  • Close to the sea and the mountains
  • Wide range of accommodation

Disadvantages

  • Buses only go to Valverde and around El Golfo
  • Weather is worse in the winter months than in other parts of the island

El Pinar

This quiet town in the south of the island is a great base for trips into the mountains and the orphaned western part of El Hierro.

Benefits

  • Close to the mountains on foot and by car
  • Quiet surroundings, yet basic amenities (several restaurants as well as small supermarkets and petrol stations)
  • Beautiful surrounding landscape and sunset views

Disadvantages

  • Fewer entertainment options, quiet village life
  • Less choice of accommodation and no traditional hotels

La Restinga

The only town that can be called a seaside resort, it lies at the southernmost tip of the island and is particularly popular with divers.

Benefits

  • Right by the sea, nice promenade and swimming opportunities
  • The best place for diving
  • Good amenities (restaurants, supermarket)

Disadvantages

  • Far from all parts of the island
  • Off walking routes

Our tips and where we stayed

From the beginning of planning our trip, it was clear that we wanted to stay in a quiet place in an apartment with a view.

We chose the cozy Casitas de Pao apartment with a fully equipped cabin.

The beautiful accommodation on the outskirts of El Pinar is ideal for families or couples travelling by car looking for tranquillity.

El Hierro hotel prices

Accommodation on the island is not among the cheapest. On the contrary, it is one of the most expensive locations in the Canary Islands.

Prices between June and September are normally between 100 eur and 200 eur per night in a double room.

However, in El Hierro you can find many accommodations for only slightly higher prices, where you can have a whole villa for 6 or more people.

Prices in winter are between 80 eur and 150 eur per night.
