La Frontera

Candelaria Bell Tower

La Frontera is the second largest city on the island and consists of several smaller municipalities, the most important of which is Tigaday.

While the town centre itself isn't very important and doesn't offer much of interest apart from a few restaurants, shops and the Ternecio supermarket (9am-9pm, until 1:30pm on Sundays), one of the most visited monuments, El Hierra, towers over the town.

The bell tower on the red hill of Joapira

On the conical hill of Joapira, which is made up of red volcanic rock, a beautiful little white bell tower rises 50 metres from its church.

Its shape and its position on the high ground is very much like a lighthouse.

The Iglesia Candelaria is located at the foot of the hill about 100 metres from the bell tower.

The wrestling arena

Next to the church, you can visit the wrestling arena, the Campo de Lucha, one of the symbols of La Frontera, free of charge (outside of events).

From the arena and the bell tower, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the "El Golfo" area, a wide plain with many villages set beneath the steep slopes of the mountains.

Accommodation in La Frontera

The towns of Frontera and Tigaday are good alternatives to Valverde if you want to live in a place with rich facilities.

In addition, access to natural attractions by car is considerably shorter from here than from Valverde.

Directly in La Frontera/Tigaday you will find only one classic hotel::

You will also find many private apartments, of which we would choose these in the centre of town with good ratings:

How to get there

When travelling by car to La Frontera, you can park anywhere along the street where there is a free space. Plus, there's a pretty big free parking lot in the center.

There are also bus routes to downtown La Frontera:

  • Line 3 - Valverde, Las Puntas, Ecomuseo Guinea, Mocalan
  • Line 12 - Pozo de la Salud
