Perhaps every Canary Island has its own "Charco Azul", which translates to Blue Pool.
Also on El Hierro you will find a site with this name. The dramatic and very rugged coastline in the north of the island creates natural coves with calmer waters, where pools have been built that, although naturally filled with seawater, protect visitors from the waves with artificial concrete walls.
One of the most beautiful natural pools is Charco Azul.
Have you been looking for a different "Charco Azul"? We have a guide for them too:
- Charco Azul on La Palma
- Charco de los Clicos on Lanzarote
Take a dip in the sea and enjoy the views
The natural pools are located under an 80-metre-high cliff, but a comfortable walkway with railings leads to them.
There are concrete platforms by the sea where you can sunbathe, with steps leading down to pools that are sheltered from the open sea but also have seawater.
Expect that it can get crowded in the summer season, but this usually only happens in August and late July.
From the top of the cliff you can enjoy beautiful views of the entire northern coast of El Hierro.
How to get there
A tarmac road leads directly to Charco Azul, with free parking at the end.
The turn-off from the main road is well signposted.
There is no bus service to Charco Azul, the nearest stop for line 12 is in the village of Los Llanillos about 1.5km up the steep hill.
