Casa Batlló

Casa Battló

The architect Gaudí always built with respect for the laws of nature, from which he drew inspiration. This was also the case with the unique Art Nouveau building Casa Batlló, which he substantially rebuilt between 1904 and 1906.

The gently undulating façade, with its skull-shaped balconies and windows divided by shinbones, is covered with sparkling mosaic stones. Just a short distance from where this house stands, you'll come across another Gaudi gem , Casa Milá.

Image and history

Built in 1877, the house was rebuilt in the early 20th century by its owner, textile magnate Josep Batlló, who chose the inventive Antonio Gaudí as his architect, with the brief that the building should make a different impression on each visitor.

The result is a unique building whose facade is covered in a shimmering façade of colourful mosaics with balconies resembling human skulls, large lower windows divided by columns in the shape of shinbones and a roof decorated with chimneys in the shape of aliens.

Equally impressive is the interior with its novel rounded curves, the traditional "Gaudian" play of colours and shadows through small stained glass windows, or perhaps the interesting decoration of the staircase with pictures of octopuses and starfish.

Casa Batlló is, in short, a unique building, but also one of the strangest in Europe. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

Terrace with bar and Gaudi's dreams

On the roof of the house, a unique terrace with a view and an outdoor bar is open to all visitors, where you can have a pleasant rest.

On the other hand, in the basement at the end of the tour you will visit the very interesting audiovisual exhibition "Gaudi's Dreams".

The roughly 2-minute art video projected on all the walls of the enclosed room was created by artist Refik Anadol, who tried to get inside Gaudí's mind with this work.
