Mercat de la Boqueria

Mercat de la Boqueria

The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria or simply La Boqueria Market is another of the "must visit" places in Barcelona.

You'd be hard pressed to find a more photogenic place full of fresh food elsewhere in the city. Here you will find fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, seafood, tapas, sushi and much more.

The best accommodation in Barcelona

You'll find La Boqueria market roughly halfway down La Rambla in one of the short side streets. The market's ornate facade can already be seen from La Rambla.

It is by far Barcelona's oldest market, dating back to 1217, when weekly and later daily meat markets were held here.

The market as it stands today, with its steel roof, was built in 1914 and is still in operation today for its original purpose. Although it is located in the most touristic area of Barcelona, locals come here to shop for the always fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, meat and many other foods.

A great place to grab a quick bite to eat

However, the market has been transformed considerably in recent years and many of the stalls are mainly aimed at tourists.

They sell so many different goodies that you can easily take with you, and some stalls even offer simple table seating.

Particularly popular are the various types of seafood, fried chicken or empanadas.

Prices are relatively good and you can buy a small snack here between 5 eur and 7 eur.

Credit card is the preferred method of payment at all the stalls, however you can also pay with cash here.

Admission and opening hours

It's open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 8:30pm, and we definitely recommend going in the morning when it's not so crowded and all the food is fresh.

It remains closed on Sundays.

Admission is free.
