Cathedral of the Holy Cross and St. Eulalia

Barcelona Cathedral

Although most travellers will think of the huge Sagrada Família, Barcelona is also home to the classic ancient Gothic cathedral, which is in fact still the main Catholic church in the city.

Dedicated to the patron saint of Barcelona, St. Eulalia, plus the Holy Cross, the cathedral stands in the heart of the historic Barri Gotic district.

The 10 cheapest hotels in Barcelona

The mighty Gothic cathedral began construction in 1298 and the main building was underway until the 15th century. However, it wasn't fully completed until 1913, when the tallest central tower was finally finished.

Barcelona Cathedral is a three-nave church 90 metres long, with the tallest tower rising to a height of 53 metres. We definitely recommend visiting the interior of the cathedral, which we think is one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in Europe.

The cathedral complex is complemented by a smaller monastery with a green courtyard where 13 white geese are kept at all times. It is said that Saint Eulalie was transformed into a white goose after her death. The number 13 refers to the young age at which St Eulalie died.

Admission and opening hours

The cathedral is open for tourists between 9:30am and 5pm, and for the faithful from 8:30am. In summer it closes at 6:30 pm.

Ticket prices are as follows:

  • Visiting the Cathedral - 14 eur
  • Temple + terrace visit (Vespertin Visits) - 28 eur

Tickets can be purchased online on the official website or at the ticket office (card or cash) in the building to the left of the entrance to the cathedral (about 80 meters).
