A somewhat neglected monument in the famous Piazza dei Miracoli is the Camposanto Cemetery, often referred to as Campo Santo Monumentale. The cemetery is an example of the extraordinary cultural architecture of the Pisan Republic and a beautiful place with a majestic touch.
Construction of the cemetery began between 1277 and 1287, but was not completed until 200 years later. The building is more like a monastery corridor with an atrium.
Gothic walls and beautiful frescoes
Camposanto is rectangular in shape, flanked by high walls with a total of 43 Gothic arches, under which most of the tombs are hidden.
In addition to the tombs, the walls below the arches contain sarcophagi from ancient Rome and the outer walls are decorated with magnificent frescoes by the best artists of the time.
Admission and opening hours
The cemetery is open to the public daily from 10:00-19:00.
Separate admission to the cemetery alone is available at 7 eur, combined with the Baptistery, Leaning Tower and small museum at 27 eur.
