Pisa is located in central Italy in Tuscany and is perfectly accessible by air from all over Europe as well as by rail or bus from Italian destinations.

By air

Pisa is particularly accessible by plane, which is the fastest but also by far the cheapest option for travel. The city has its own international Pisa PSA, mainly served by low-cost Ryanair flights from all over Italy and major European cities.

One-way fares to Pisa from European destinations range from 35 eur to 100 eur.

By train in Italy

Pisa has great rail connections to the rest of Italy. You can reach all major Italian cities from the Alps to Sicily very frequently and comfortably. Pisa may not be on a high-speed line, but it still has connections to all corners of the country. There are no direct international trains to Pisa.

For the lowest price on long-distance trains (i.e. all trains marked Inter City IC, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Frecciarossa), ideally buy your tickets online at least 3 weeks in advance at trenitalia.com.

On the other hand, for regional connections (R - Regionale or RV - Regionale Veloce) the ticket price is always the same until departure. You can also buy online, but you can also buy before departure at the ticket office or at a ticket machine.

For example, you can go from Pisa to Rome from 22 eur, to Florence from 8,70 eur, to Bologna from 15 eur, to Genoa from 14 eur or to Milan from 22 eur. For detailed information on local connections in Tuscany, see for example the Activities chapter of this guide or the Transport chapter of the Tuscany guide.

In Pisa you will find two train stations:

  • Pisa Centrale - the main station where all trains to/from Pisa stop.
  • Pisa San Rossore - station on the way north along the coast or to Lucca, where only regional trains stop

Although only Trenitalia trains arrive in Pisa, there are several different carriers operating in Italy. You can easily compare tickets on Trainline, where you can buy them directly for the same price as on the carrier's website.

By bus in Italy

While international bus services from Pisa are not very frequent, domestic buses run to a large number of destinations around Italy.

Long-distance connections

Pisa can also be reached by several bus companies, but the journey to the vast majority of cities is always considerably slower and, more importantly, considerably less frequent than travelling by train. So the advantage may be a lower price, but even that is by no means the rule.

The cheapest tickets are offered by Itabus, starting from about 5 eur on long-distance routes when bought online at least a month in advance at itabus.it. For this price you can buy tickets from Pisa to Turin or Rome, for example. Shorter connections to Genoa and La Spezia start from 2 eur.

Another major carrier is Flixbus, which offers connections to Genoa, Rome, Naples and more. Prices usually start at around 15 eur and tickets can always be purchased online at flixbus.com.

The last major carrier going to Pisa is Marinonus, which offers connections throughout Italy, but prices are usually the most expensive (from about 30 eur upwards). Tickets can be purchased online at marinobus.it.

You'll find the long-distance bus station in the north of Pisa near the Leaning Tower in the Pietrasanta car park - see location on map.

Local connections

There are frequent bus services from Pisa to nearby villages not served by train. The central stop is called Pisa Sesta Porta and is about 150-200 metres from Centrale train station - see location on map.

Tickets can be bought at the ticket office at the bus station, from the driver, or on the AT Bus mobile app (Google Play / App Store).
