Piazza dei Miracoli, one of the most famous squares in Italy and indeed the world. It is also often called Piazza del Duomo, or Cathedral Square. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in the world with a showcase of top medieval architecture.
The square was created during the 11th century at the height of the Pisan Republic, and gradually iconic buildings still known across the globe have risen on the square.
On a vast area of almost 9 hectares covered with a neatly trimmed lawn, you can visit these monuments, just click on the name for details:
- Leaning Tower of Pisa
- Cathedral of the Assumption
- Baptistery of St. John the Baptist
- Camposanto Cemetery
All the buildings in the square form a single complex, which is supported, among other things, by the same material used on all the facades - marble from the mines in the nearby town of Carrara. The entire Piazza del Duomo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with all its buildings.
