In this chapter you will find out how to get around Pisa by public transport, how much tickets cost and where to buy them.
City buses
Only buses operate as public transport in Pisa, but they run frequently and are relatively easy to use. The city buses are orange, older ones can also be green and white and ply the streets of Pisa from about 6:00am to 8:30pm, with 1 night service operating during the night.
The backbone bus line is the LAM Rossa, which connects Pisa Centrale station, the city centre, Piazza dei Miracoli with the Leaning Tower and a large car park with long-distance bus stops every 10 minutes.
Public transport tickets
In Pisa, as in all other Tuscan cities, one 70-minute ticket costs 1,70 eur. You can buy the ticket in all newsagents (Tabacchi), but also in most grocery stores and supermarkets. Tickets can also be bought on the AT Bus mobile app (Google Play / App Store).
There are also blue ticket machines at the train station near the bus stops, where you can also pay by card.
There is no all-day or multi-day fare in Pisa. You can only buy a discounted pass of 10 tickets of 70 minutes each for 15,50 eur
You must always mark your ticket in the yellow marker inside the bus.
On foot
However, the easiest way to get around the city is on foot. You can walk the whole of Pisa from the station through the centre to the Leaning Tower in about 30 minutes at a slow walk for 2 km.
You'll see most of the city's attractions and won't have to deal with any tickets or timetables.
Car rental
If Pisa will serve as a starting point for trips to Tuscan villages or the nearby Apuan Alps, renting a car will be the best option. On the other hand, if you intend to travel mainly for sightseeing or beaches, the train is definitely a better choice.
Pisa Airport is home to many international and local car rental companies. Prices for smaller rentals start at 130 eur for 4 days.
You can compare prices of all car rental companies in Pisa, for example, on booking.com, where you can also book a car directly.
