The first building in the Piazza dei Miracoli that you come across on your way off the main road is the imposing 55-metre-high Baptistery of St John the Baptist. That is, the baptistery, a building used only for the sacrament of baptism.
In Italy from the 11th to the 14th century, detached baptisteries were fashionable, but the Pisan one is one of the largest and most striking. It belongs to the neighbouring Cathedral of the Assumption and was built as a second structure in the Square of Miracles.
Impressive dimensions
The Baptistery is definitely the largest of its kind in Italy, standing at a diameter of 108 metres.
Its appearance complements the other two important buildings in Piazza dei Miracoli, as it is built in the same Pisan Romanesque style. The entire façade is formed by Carrara marble, as are the interiors of the baptistery.
Admission and opening hours
The Baptistery is open, like the Cathedral, from 10:00-19:00.
Separate admission to the Baptistery can be purchased at 7 eur, and in combination with the Leaning Tower at 27 eur.
