Pozo de las Caloscas is a traditional fishing village that has kept the same character for decades.
The place is also popular for the possibility of safe swimming in the sea water. Here, lava flows have created natural pools filled with seawater but protected from the big waves.
People have reinforced these pools with concrete walls, so access to the water is really safe and comfortable.
Traditional houses with thatched roofs
This old fishing village is located under a high cliff right by the sea and next to the natural pools.
The fishermen built the houses made of volcanic stones and thatched roofs as summer residences for their daily fishing and as a base for their fishing gear. Many fishermen still use the houses for this purpose.
The sea can be reached from the modern village of Pozo de las Calcosas via a staircase that climbs some 50 metres.
Swimming in the sea and views
Tourists come here mainly to bathe in the sea. Because the concrete piers and natural pools are not very spacious, tourists usually only come for an hour or two and not for the whole day.
How to get there
There is a tarmac road leading to Pozo de las Calcosas from the village of Mocanal and the turn off the main road is well signposted.
Line 9 from Valverde also runs here, but only 4 times a day on weekdays and twice a day at weekends.
Accommodation
There are several apartments in Pozo de las Calcoasas. Stay especially if you are travelling around the island by car and are looking for quiet places.
We would recommend these accommodations:
- Casa La Perdiz - an abandoned house 800 metres from the village in a traditional style, but with a modern interior and breathtaking views.
- Pozo de las Calcoasas El Hierro - a well-rated apartment in the centre of the village
