Valverde

Valverde is the capital and the largest city on the island with 5,000 inhabitants.
Unlike the main towns of the other Canary Islands, Valverde is not by the sea, but in the hills at 600 metres, mainly because of the inaccessible coastline.
At first glance, Valverde is a very ordinary, nicely landscaped town with no major monuments. But you'll soon discover that it has a very friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the local pedestrian area is definitely worth a stroll, perhaps while shopping at the island's largest supermarket.
What to see in Valverde?
Life is mainly along Calle de La Constitución, where there are plenty of restaurants, cafes, pizzerias, shops, but also a post office and banks.
From this street, small narrow streets run steeply up or down, which you can wander into the local residential areas.
The only monument in Valverde is the very nice church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, open to the public for free.
The centre of island life
Valverde is home to everything important that locals need to live. In addition to shops and many restaurants, there is a very modern hospital, a gas station or a football stadium.
Two supermarkets are useful for tourists:
- Terencio (9:00-20:30, closed on Sundays) is very well equipped and the largest on the island.
- Supermercado La Estación (8:00-20:00, Saturday to 14:00, closed Sunday) has only basic facilities
- Unide (9:00-20:30, Saturday and Sunday until 14:00) is a nice little supermarket and the only one that stays open on Sundays
Accommodation
Stay in Valverde if you want to have all services close at hand. If you don't want to rent a car, accommodation in Valverde is almost a must, as all the bus routes run from here.
Since Valverde is not primarily a tourist destination, there is only one classic hotel:
You will also find many private apartments, of which we would choose these in the city centre with good ratings:
