Las Playas

Las Playas

Las Playas is one of the most remarkable natural features in the Canary Islands.

The landscape is shaped like a huge crater, or rather an amphitheatre, 9 km long and over 1,000 metres high, created by massive landslides several thousand years ago.

The entire south-eastern coastline is made up of monumental 600-1 100 m high and very rugged cliffs. The Mirador de Isora viewpoint offers excellent views of the natural 'amphitheatre'.

Bonanza rock formation and beaches

One of the most photogenic spots is the Roque de Bonanza, a rock of typically irregular volcanic shapes jutting out of the sea about 150 metres from the shore.

The area around the Bonanza Rock is also popular for swimming.

There is a small artificial beach with black volcanic sand, and the natural rocky beach next to the road tunnel provides a relatively comfortable access to the water.

The largest pebble and stone beach in Las Playas is not very suitable for swimming as it has very difficult access to the sea.

The famous Hotel Parador de El Hierro

Under the cliffs of Las Playas is probably the most famous hotel on the island, owned by the Spanish state-owned company Paradores de Turismo.

Stay at the Parador de El Hierro **** if you love staying in pure nature away from the cities, but at the same time easily accessible by car and even by bus.

Although the Parador de El Hierro is one of the most luxurious hotels on the island, prices are affordable and range between 80 eur and 120 eur per night depending on the season.

How to get there

Las Playas is reached by a new tarmac road, which is a continuation of the road to the main port.

You'll pass through an almost 1km-long single-lane tunnel where traffic is controlled by traffic lights, as you can't avoid two oncoming cars inside.

The Parador de El Hierro hotel, with a stop at Bonanza beach, is reached by bus line 7 from Valverde via the port of Estaca.

Line 7 runs 6 times a day from Monday to Friday and 5 times a day on weekends and holidays.
