La Restinga is located at the southernmost tip of the island and is the only place on El Hierro that could be described as a seaside beach resort.
La Restinga has a nice short promenade along the harbour, as well as facilities such as several restaurants and a Trenecio supermarket.
Beaches and swimming
From the promenade, a path continues through the lava fields, but these are interspersed with segments of black volcanic sand resembling beaches.
As the coastline is very rugged and the rocks are rough, in several places concrete paths have been built right down to the sea, where they end in comfortable steps.
There is also a small sandy beach with direct access to the sea right in the centre of La Restinga in the harbour.
Diving centre
The marina area is one of the most popular and easiest places for diving, especially for night dives.
The very calm waters offer great visibility and the rugged bottom attracts a lot of marine life. La Restinga is an absolutely ideal place for first-time divers, for example.
The southernmost point of Spain
The rugged coastline to the south-west of the town centre is covered in centuries of dried lava, interspersed with a network of beaten paths. The turquoise Atlantic contrasts with the rugged and desolate moonscape.
And it's here that you'll find the southernmost point in Spain.
The site is about 650 metres from the centre of La Restinga (see map) and there are no signs on the way. Unfortunately, there is also no reminder that you are actually standing on the southernmost point of Spain.
Tourists therefore often take photos by the stone pillars about 1 km away, which, however, only mark the beginning of the natural protected underwater area.
Accommodation
La Restinga is a popular place to stay if you like being close to the sea or are heading to El Hierro for diving.
Although La Restinga is a seaside resort, you won't find traditional hotels here. Most of the accommodation is made up of private apartments.

How to get there
La Restinga is reached by a main road and you can park anywhere along the street for free. Most parking is at the end of the promenade towards the southernmost point of Spain.
There are also public transport buses to the town, specifically line 8 from the town of El Pinar, where you can change to line 2 to Valverde.
Buses run 6 and 5 times a day on Sundays and public holidays respectively.
Detailed information including timetables, ticket prices and links to the official website can be found in the Transport chapter.
