Car rental in Lanzarote

Black Beach

If you want to get to know as much of Lanzarote as possible and travel around the volcanic landscapes that are among the island's highlights, you have no choice but to rent a car.

Even in Lanzarote, the general guidelines for renting a car apply and if you are new to this segment, read our article How to rent a car abroad for the first time.

When and how to book a car in Lanzarote

When booking, the higher the season, the more expensive the rental fee will be. Although Lanzarote is a year-round destination, the highest prices are always during the summer holidays, but also in autumn and winter when the Canaries are a pleasant weather destination for most of Europe.

For example, to book, we recommend using Booking.com's comparison engine of all car rental companies, which will sort the results according to your chosen criteria.

We recommend filtering through individual car rental companies and not choosing cars from a non-serious Goldcar rental company.

Car rental prices in Lanzarote

Car hire in Lanzarote is relatively cheap compared to other European destinations.

The price depends on the length of the rental, the longer the rental, the cheaper the daily price will be.

Price examples:

Always read the detailed rental conditions and especially the insurance, which you can also find on Booking.com. Some rental companies include insurance in the final price, elsewhere you will have to pay extra, between 5 eur and 10 eur per day depending on the type of car and the length of the rental.

International driving licence and other documents

Lanzarote is part of the European Union and therefore there is no need to arrange an international driving licence before travelling. The rental company will also accept a national driving licence from any EU country.

In case you hold a driving licence from a non-EU country, Norway, Switzerland or Iceland, get an international driving licence with your licence.

Car rental companies usually require a credit card to rent a car, and will often lend on a debit card, but either on less favourable terms or with a very high deposit often exceeding even 1 000 eur.

Petrol prices and parking

Petrol is generally cheaper in Lanzarote than in mainland Europe. Typical prices for one litre of conventional 95 octane petrol range between 1,15 eur and 1,40 eur.

The density of petrol stations is perfectly adequate, especially along the coast, where you will come across a petrol station every few kilometres.

Parking is quite easy in Lanzarote outside of the main town of Arrecife. There are large car parks at most beaches and tourist attractions.

Parking is free throughout Lanzarote unless it is some type of private parking. The exception is Arrecife, where getting a parking space can be a big hassle, detailed information is described in the mini-guide to the city.

Traffic and traffic regulations

The main roads are in very good condition, while the secondary roads are very winding and their condition is often not very good. The smaller roads to the outlying beaches and natural sights are often unpaved and dusty.

Lanzarote, however, doesn't have any difficult terrain and even on dirt roads you can usually get by with the smallest of cars.

In Lanzarote, we recommend that you follow all the rules.

There are plenty of speed cameras on the class 1 roads and extensive checks are not uncommon either, especially at weekends. An unfastened seatbelt, even in the back seat, can get you out 150 eur on the spot or 200 eur at the police station. A speciality of police officers is to stand at roundabouts and check all the occupants of a car in detail to make sure everything is in order.

Traffic regulations are similar to everywhere else in Europe.

Driving on the right is classical here, seat belt use is compulsory and talking on the phone while driving is forbidden under heavy fines! Speed limits are as follows:

  • 50 km/h in the village.
  • outside the village: 100 km/h
  • motorways and all roads with 2 lanes in one direction: 120 km/h
