Olympic Stadium

Olympic Stadium

Barcelona hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics, which dramatically changed the face of the city. Most of the sports venues were built on Montjuïc Hill, including the main Olympic Stadium.

The stadium is named Lluís Companys Estadi Olímpic.

It was originally built in 1927, but was extensively renovated and expanded for a capacity of 55,000 spectators before the 1992 Olympics.

The building is extraordinary because of its recess into the hillside. From the outside it therefore gives a much more subtle impression than its actual capacity.

The Olympic Stadium is a temporary home for the FC Barcelona football team in case of repairs or renovations to their main stadium , Camp Nou.

Next to the main stadium is the Palau Sant Jordi sports hall, originally built for gymnastics, volleyball and handball competitions. Palau Sant Jordi is still used as a sports hall today.
