La Rambla

La Rambla

Barcelona offers many interesting places and one of the most interesting is undoubtedly Barcelona's most famous street, La Rambla, which starts at Port Vell and ends at Plaça de Catalunya.

The busy 1.2km long street will captivate just about anyone who visits it. The unique experience is not only a pleasant walk, but above all what happens on it. La Rambla is packed day and night with vendors, artists, live statues and street performances.

Sometimes the street is referred to as "Las Ramblas".

A bustling shopping street

One of the most famous city streets in the world, La Rambla is the lively artery of central Barcelona. It connects the grand Plaça de Catalunya to the harbour, where it is topped by the massive Christopher Columbus monument.

La Rambla is a paradise for lovers of bustling life, shopping in small shops of all kinds from luxury clothing to cheap souvenirs.

However, La Rambla is home to cafes of all shapes and sizes and great local restaurants serving typical Catalan tapas. Prices here are as normal as anywhere else in Barcelona.

Strolling by day, exuberant revelry by night

Even if you don't want to stop at the restaurants or shops right on La Rambla, it's definitely worth walking at least part of the street. The wide central strip is lined with mature plane trees, between which runs a wide pedestrian walkway full of benches.

At night, La Rambla is transformed into a lively, illuminated thoroughfare, with a plethora of street performers, food and drink stalls and souvenir shops.

What not to forget on La Rambla?

The street is lined with lots of interesting sights or famous places, just like its immediate surroundings. The following should definitely not miss your attention:

  • The Mercat de la Boqueria - the largest and oldest market in Barcelona with a magnificent steel structure
  • Café de l'Opera - one of Barcelona's most famous bars with a history dating back to the 19th century
  • Hotel Oriente - a famous hotel building dating back to the 17th century when it served as a Franciscan monastery
  • Placa Reial - a tucked away beautiful square with arcades all around its perimeter, located just a few metres from La Rambla
  • Gran Teatre del Liceu - a beautiful opera house, the most famous in Barcelona, which has been operating since 1847

Accommodation nearby

La Rambla is one of the main centres of Barcelona and there is a huge concentration of sights within 3km. This is also why this area is great for accommodation.

However, count on the fact that hotel prices here are the highest of all Barcelona.

Right on La Rambla we would recommend these hotels with the best value for money.

The most luxurious hotel on this street is considered to be the Hotel Bagués *****.
