The Catholic Church of Santa Maria del Mar is one of the oldest and most important religious monuments in Barcelona.
The basilica was built in a record time of 55 years between 1329 and 1383. The church is a beautiful example of Catalan Gothic with a unity of style in both exterior and interior, which is quite unique in similarly large medieval buildings.
The best accommodation in Barcelona
From the outside, the Basilica looks majestic and austere in contrast to the narrow streets of La Ribera, while the inside is very airy thanks to the large windows and bright interior.
Visit the terrace of the basilica
The viewing terrace of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar is a surprisingly little discovered tourist attraction.
However, it offers unique views of Barcelona that are among the best of the city centre's viewpoints.
The only staircase leading up to the terrace.
