Maritime Museum

A very nice museum of Brunei's naval history can be found in Kota Batu, about 4.5 km east of the centre of Bandar Seri Begawan.

You can also visit the Malay Technology Museum in close proximity.

Museum collections

The Maritime Museum is divided into 3 sections:

  • The first section displays more than 13,500 items from a shipwreck fished out in 1997 about 32 nautical miles from Bandar Seri Begawan. The ship was probably from the 16th or 17th century.
  • The second section explores the history of Brunei seafaring since the 14th century with several successful replica ships.
  • The third part is set aside for temporary exhibitions.

Admission and opening hours

The museum is open at the following times:

  • Monday to Thursday and Saturday - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday - 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Friday - closed

Last admission is always 30 minutes before closing time.

Admission is free for local residents. International visitors pay 3 bnd.

There is no bus service to the museum, so your best bet is to use a taxi via the DART mobile app.

You'll pay roughly 5 bnd for the journey from the centre.
