King Island lies in Bass Strait about 120 km south of the Australian mainland (specifically Cape Otway) and about 100 km from the northwestern tip of Tasmania.

The island is currently only accessible by plane.

By air - routes and prices

The island has one airport, coded KNS, which is located about 5 km from the largest town of Currie.

Only 3 airlines fly regularly to King Island:

  • Rex Airlines - direct flights to Melbourne' s main airport MEL and to Tasmania's BurnieAirport BWT
    • A return ticket from Melbourne costs around 395 aud
    • Allows connecting flights to other airlines
  • Sharp Airlines - direct flights to Melbourne-Essendon MEB and Tasmanian airports Burnie BWT and Launceston LST
    • Usually lowest fares to Melbourne around 360 aud, ideally with purchase more than 1 month before departure
    • Prices to Tasmania are significantly higher and return costs around 500 aud
  • King Island Airlines - direct flights to the small Melbourne-Moorabbin airport MBW

As all airlines only operate small propeller aircraft for 10-30 people, capacity is limited and in the summer season (November to March) it is definitely worth buying tickets at least 1-4 months in advance.

As the departure date gets closer, prices go up to 3 times the normal prices and it may even happen that on some days the flights are completely sold out.

Ferries

Shipping to King Island is currently for freight only.

Regular ferries do not operate for passengers to King Island.
