What is a limestone forest?

A calcified, or petrified, forest is a unique desert landscape above majestic cliffs that has been formed over millennia.

The limestone that makes up the cliffs of King Island has gradually attached itself to the roots of dead and rotting trees, and over the years, strong winds have exposed and made these roots visible.

The calcified forest, full of rock formations of peculiar shapes, is located in a small desert about 200 by 200 metres in size.

How to get there

The petrified forest can be reached by car on a dirt road about 25 km long.

The road is passable for all types of cars, but you should expect frequent potholes and rough sections and an average speed of no more than 30 km/h.

From the small car park there is a very comfortable path of about 650 metres through the forest.
