The former main airport of the Osaka region is now used for domestic flights mainly by All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines and occasionally smaller Japanese airlines.
It is located approximately 15 km from the centre of Osaka and at most an hour's drive from other nearby metropolises - Kobe, Nara, Kyoto.
Itami Airport is served exclusively by domestic flights from Japanese destinations. Flights are very frequent and there are multiple daily flights to major destinations such as Tokyo, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Niigata and others.
There are two other airports in the Osaka conurbation:
- Kansai KIX - a large international airport, which is also served by low-cost domestic flights.
- Kobe UKB - a small domestic airport, smaller than Itami but with a different airline offering
