Hoi An is a relatively small town, so most tourists get here via nearby Da Nang, which is one of the largest cities in Vietnam.
However, tourist buses and minivans also go directly to Hoi An. For all the information you need about travelling to Hoi An, see our guide below.
By air
If you are travelling from further afield, using air travel may be the best option. There is no airport directly in Hoi An, but you can find an international airport in nearby Da Nang DAD.
There are several international flights to the airport, with direct flights to Tokyo, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, for example. Many of these routes are operated by the popular AirAsia. Many Chinese cities are also connected to Da Nang.
Domestic flights are also very useful for tourists, with direct flights to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc and many other destinations in Vietnam. Most flights are arranged by Vietnam's low-cost carrier VietJet Air or Vietnam Airlines.
By train
For longer journeys within Vietnam, the train is a good option.
The line connecting Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City in the south also passes through nearby Da Nang, but there is no railway station in Hoi An itself. The train can therefore be a convenient option when travelling not only from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, but also from Hue or Nha Trang, for example.
Travelling by train is a relatively comfortable and safe alternative to travelling by long-distance buses, although it takes a little longer, and you also have to take into account the transport from Da Nang to Hoi An.
Book your train tickets at 12go.asia.
There are several trains on the line during the day, the most popular being the SE19 line, which runs overnight. Train tickets are considerably more expensive than bus tickets, for example, you will pay approximately 170 000 vnd.
See below for information on how to get from Da Nang train station directly to Hoi An.
By long-distance bus
Long-distance bus coverage is really great in central Vietnam, so you can get direct buses to many destinations where trains don't go. Buses are often a more accessible, cheaper and faster form of transport, but they are less comfortable and more dangerous.
Book your bus tickets at 12go.asia. For a ticket from Hanoi to Hoi An you will pay approximately 600 000 vnd.
In some cases, it may also be convenient to book tickets only to Da Nang and then take public transport.
How to get from Da Nang to Hoi An?
Many trains and bus services run to neighbouring Da Nang, from where you must then take a bus to the centre of Hoi An.
If you want to make your transport easier and book ahead, your only option is to use a tourist minibus, which is quite expensive.
You can also get to Hoi An using public transport. In this case, bus tickets are bought from the driver. Line LK02 connects Hoi An city centre with the Vietnam/Korean University stop on the outskirts of Da Nang, ticket price is 15 000 vnd.
Bus number 16 runs to Da Nang University from the city centre and the bus station. From the train station, it is possible to walk to Số 14-16 Lý Thái Tổ bus stop, where line 16 also stops.
