Hoi An is a small town with a compact city centre that is relatively easy to get around on foot.
However, if you want to take a trip to the beach or nearby villages, you will need to use some form of transport. There are several to choose from.
To get around Hoi An, you can use a rented scooter. If you don't want to drive, you can take a taxi or Grab or take part in an organized tour for relatively reasonable prices. Local buses do run around the area, but they service very few tourist sites.
Scooter hire
If you want to get around Hoi An on your own, a scooter is definitely the best option. Beware though, there is quite a lot of traffic in central Vietnam, so we only recommend driving a scooter if you have enough experience with it.
A scooter can be a great means of transport for trips to nearby villages, beaches, and even to the ruins of My Son or Da Nang.
Where to rent a scooter and what are the prices?
You certainly don't need to arrange scooter rental long in advance, just make arrangements on the spot the day before.
The easiest way is to book a scooter directly at the accommodation, almost all homestays and hotels offer some scooters. You can also rent a scooter from one of the ubiquitous travel agencies, but they will probably ask for a deposit.
The price for renting a scooter varies considerably depending on the type of scooter and engine size, usually you will pay around 150 000 vnd per day for a scooter, better scooters can cost as much as 200 000 vnd.
As part of an organised trip
In case you don't want to drive a scooter, booking an organised trip is the easiest way to get to more remote places. You can book a trip online or on the spot at any of the travel agencies in town.
The best organized tours in Hoi An
You can get a half-day trip out of town starting from 350 000 vnd.
Taxi or Grab
The distances in Hoi An are not long, so a taxi is one of the most pleasant options for transport from the city to the beach, for example.
It is best to arrange an official taxi at your hotel. But a very good alternative can be the Grab app, where you can see the price in advance. Grab is also very cheap, the rate is approximately between 10 000 vnd and 15 000 vnd per km.
Local buses
Of course there are local buses in Hoi An, but they don't usually go to tourist places. You can mainly use the following lines, paying the fare in cash at the driver:
- Line LK02 - connects Vietnam/Korean University on the outskirts of Da Nang with Cua Dai harbour through the centre of Hoi An, ticket price 15 000 vnd, suitable for trips to Da Nang and Cua Dai beach.
