The Olomana Trail hike is one of the most beautiful, but also the most challenging on the island of Oahu. The very steep trail takes you through dense forest to the crests of the "Three Peaks", the three peaks of Mount Olomana, which offer truly breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Difficulty and route map

The Olomana Trail is generally one of the more challenging treks suitable for hikers with better fitness, however, at least the first 3 km or so (one way) to Olomana First Peak can be done relatively easily, just be aware of the high elevation gain and narrow rocky trail.

The next part of the trek to Olomana Second and Third Peak is much more difficult and requires climbing over small rocks.

While no climbing experience is necessary, this part of the route is recommended only for experienced hikers.

How to get to the Olomana Trail?

The trail begins at the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club near the town of Kailua. At the gate to the golf course, just tell the ranger that you are heading to the Olomana Trail and the ranger will let you in with no problem.

Continue on the small tarmac road for about 450 metres to the sign marking the start of the trek. From the road, take a left into the dense forest and just follow the beaten path.

You can park at the beginning of the road towards the golf course, but make sure you really do park the whole car on the shoulder or risk being towed. There is room for about 8-10 cars, but most of the time this will be enough.

There is also an unmarked bus stop at the intersection for the 66 and 67 buses that run every so often from Honolulu.
