Newcastle Castle

Set right in the centre of Newcastle, the medieval fortification is now divided by the High Level Bridge and the railway corridor and lies close to Newcastle Cathedral.

The castle's current appearance dates back to the Norman period. The most original part is the massive defensive tower, completed in 1177.
The two parts are divided by a track
The castle has two very well-preserved parts - the fortress and defensive tower of Castle Keep and the main part of Black Gate.
There is a gap of over 25 metres between the two, which is filled by a railway viaduct.
Both castle buildings are open to the public.
Entrance fees and opening hours
One ticket is valid for both Black Gate and Castle Keep and it will take you approximately 40 minutes to tour the whole site.
