The Grainger Indoor Market is housed in one large building in the heart of downtown just steps from Grey's Monument.

The market was built as part of a major redevelopment of the downtown area in the mid-19th century led by architect, urban planner and builder Richard Grainger, for whom the market is named.

The 10 best hotels in Newcastle

Grainger Market still serves its original purpose and there are currently around 100 active shops, restaurants or cafes inside.

The neoclassical market building was opened in 1835.

Local shopping centre

Although Grainger Market is one of the leading tourist attractions, it still retains its authenticity and the locals outnumber the tourists.

In fact, in addition to international restaurants and cafes, Grainger Market is also home to the usual types of businesses such as butchers, greengrocers, florists and cheap clothing shops.

Of course, there are also fresh fish shops, which tend to be active only in the morning and mid-morning.

Entrance fees and opening hours

Grainger Market is a public place and access is therefore free.

The market is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00-17:30.

Best location for accommodation

The area around Grainger Market is best if you want to live right in the centre of Newcastle with great transport links.

The nearby 'Monument' station is where the two local tube lines cross and the main bus station for city and regional services, Eldon Square, is just around 250 metres north, while the train station is a 15-minute walk or 2-minute tube ride away.

Most hotels are located south of Grainger Market around Bigg Market Street. We would recommend these hotels:
