Where to stay in Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle

Newcastle is an important city not only for tourism but also for trade and business, so there is a very wide range of quality hotels from multinational chains to small local hotels.

What hotel to choose and are there less safe areas in Newcastle upon Tyne?

Where to stay in Newcastle

Newcastle is a very safe city and in that respect you can stay in any neighbourhood.

However, the residential areas and outskirts of the city are not very nice looking and lack sights and attractions. We therefore recommend staying in the centre or near the coast.

Centre

The centre is defined as the area between the main railway station, Grey's Monument, Grainger Market and the River Tyne.

This is an ideal location if you want to live close to the tube, train and historic sites.

Overlooking the river

The River Tyne is one of Newcastle's main attractions and many travellers look for hotels with views of the river and the iconic 7 bridges.

By the sea

Newcastle has a beautiful coastline. If you want to stay by the beach with sea views, choose one of these two hotels:

Cheap hotels outside the centre

If you're looking for particularly cheap accommodation, we recommend choosing hotels close to a tube station.

Commuting by bus to the centre can be very lengthy and also quite uncluttered.

  • Best Western New Kent Hotel *** - Quiet location in the north of the centre about 200 metres from West Jesmond tube station
  • Kabannas Newcastle ** - popular with young people, with both classic hotel and cheaper hostel rooms relatively close to the centre near Manors tube station

Newcastle hotel prices

Typical prices for double rooms for 1 night in the better 3* or 4* hotels are between 60 gbp and 120 gbp.

Prices at hotels further away from the centre or at local 2* hotels range from 40 gbp to 60 gbp.

You will usually find the highest prices on Fridays and Saturdays and also in the summer months (June to August).

If you are heading to Newcastle at the weekend or in the summer, we recommend booking your hotel at least 2 months in advance.

Where have we stayed?

We stayed in Newcastle in April 2025.

I was looking for a hotel close to the river and the city centre, but at the same time so that we had to walk at least 15-20 minutes to the city centre as there is nothing better than a morning and evening walk.

In the end I chose the hotel Ramada Encore Gateshead *** on the south waterfront near the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

This was because the hotel offered the best price with free cancellation and most importantly breakfast. I only paid for 1 night 55 gbp.

Buses 53 and 54 run to the hotel, but it takes about 20 minutes to walk to the train station after climbing a steep hill.

The Ramada Encore is a classic hotel that doesn't impress, but it doesn't offend either. The room was clean and spacious.

The included breakfast is a buffet. A classic full English breakfast is the mainstay, supplemented by a fairly wide selection of muesli and cereals, a more limited range of pastries and fruit, and of course coffee.

The juices are only from a vending machine and were not good at all.

I was disappointed by the poor choice of yoghurts and no choice at all of cold savoury food such as cheese, vegetables or ham.

However, a better location overlooking the river is offered by a nearby restaurant for only a slightly higher price Leonardo Hotel Newcastle Quayside ****.
