By air

Durham does not have its own airport, although in earlier times airports Teesside MME was called "Durham Tees Valley".

This airport lies 40 km south of Durham and has only a couple of flights a day, including KLM' s international service to Amsterdam.

Much more important and also more accessible is the airport Newcastle NCL with a large number of routes throughout Europe.

There is no direct public transport from Newcastle Airport, but the journey through Newcastle city centre to Durham will take no more than an hour.

The Metro from the airport to the main station takes about 30 minutes and the train to Durham takes an average of 15 minutes several times an hour.

By train

Durham railway station is located approximately 1km from the city centre (see location on map) and is accessible on foot and by local bus service 40 (see Transport section).

By bus

Bus services are convenient for travel to the nearest surrounding villages and regional buses also run to Newcastle, where they are a slightly cheaper option to the train, but considerably longer.

However, all bus services between Newcastle and Durham are covered by the TNE Day Saver ticket for 7,50 gbp, as opposed to trains.

Regional routes

All regional buses stop at the central bus station on North Road just about 500 metres from the historic centre (see location on map).

Single ticket prices for all regional services within the Durham, Newcastle, Sunderland and Consett zone are 2,50 gbp. Durham lies within the TNE Day Saver zone for 7,50 gbp, which can be used for all regional services to Newcastle, Sunderland or Hadrian's Wall.

Single tickets to other destinations cost 3 gbp or 3,50 gbp.
