The small fortress of Saint John the Baptist is located right next to the Auditorium and is known among the locals as Castillo Negro, or Black Castle, after the black volcanic stone from which it is built.
The fortress was built in the 17th century as part of an important fortification of the town to defend the harbour.

Castillo San Juan Bautista is located right on the coast and is surrounded on all sides by an artificial moat. However, you can reach the fortress via a stone bridge.
Currently the fortress is not open to the public, however, it is so small that you can see the whole thing from the adjacent park.
