Stroll through the narrow streets and enjoy the views

The houses in Barrio Nuevo are literally stuck to the rocks, giving the impression of being somewhere in South America.

The only difference is that Barrio Nuevo in Santa Cruz is a perfectly safe and nicely landscaped neighbourhood.

The streets are so narrow in places that you can only walk through them. Moreover, in many places the streets turn into numerous staircases.

From the highest parts of Barrio Nuevo, you can enjoy stunning views of the whole of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Cueva Roja

At the end of Barrio Nuevo, where the hiking trail to Pico Hilario starts, you will discover the beautiful large and freely accessible Cueva Roja, named after the red coloured rocks.

How to get there

Barrio Nuevo is high up in the hills, but you can easily get to almost the viewpoint by bus.

  • Line 902 - goes to the viewpoint from the central station Intercambiador (only once every hour to once every 2 hours), other services (2-3 times per hour) go along the edge of the district and continue in the direction of Los Campitos
  • Line 228 - 2 times a day this line also runs here from the central station of Intercambiador

Alternatively, you can take the T1 tram line to Punte Zurita station, from where you can reach the viewpoint in about 1.5 km up a steep hill.
