Plaça d'Espanya is one of the most important transport and tourist spots in Barcelona. It is located in the southwestern part of the city near the Barcelona Exhibition Centre and close to Montjuïc Hill. The whole area, including the square, was designed for the 1929 International EXPO.

The centre of the square is dominated by a monumental fountain by architect Joesp Maria Jujol, a collaborator of Antoni Gaudí. However, the main unmissable landmark of the square are the two 47-metre high Venetian towers (Torres Venecianes).
They were created primarily as an artistic highlight at the entrance to the Fira de Barcelona exhibition area and continue to serve their purpose to this day. At first glance, it is obvious that they were inspired by the architecture of the bell tower of St Mark's Church in Venice.
On the other side of the square is the former bullfighting arena, the Arenas de Barcelona, now converted into a shopping centre.
Many city train lines, dozens of bus lines and also three metro lines - L1, L3, L8 - cross at Plaça d'Espanya.
